Things to Do in Cardiff-by-the-Sea for the Perfect Weekend

The stretch of coast between San Elijo Lagoon and Swami's has one of the highest concentrations of chowder houses, surf breaks, and dog-friendly patios in North County. What outsiders miss is that almost none of it moves at random. The village runs on a calendar, and once you learn the calendar, Saturday morning stops feeling like errands and starts feeling like membership.

Cardiff operates as part of the city of Encinitas, but unlike the other communities that comprise Encinitas, it has its own ZIP Code, 92007, and a population under 12,000. Small enough that one Main Street organization can more or less choreograph the year. Big enough that you can go a decade without noticing.

The thesis: one nonprofit sets the tempo

Cardiff 101 Main Street is the reason the same faces show up in the same places on the same weekends. The organization anchors a Certified California Farmers Market and produces the events that punctuate the rest of the year. Executive Director Alison Wielechowski has framed the mission plainly, calling Cardiff "a one-of-a-kind destination in North County" and "a seaside community that treasures and supports its local businesses."

If you have lived here for six months and can't recite the next three Cardiff 101 dates, you are leaving the best part of the neighborhood on the table.

The 2026 calendar, at a glance

The Cardiff Kook Run takes over downtown Encinitas on Super Bowl Sunday, with a 10K, 5K, and a family finish-line festival, and this year's theme leans into a "Kookie Monster" costume twist inspired by the Cardiff Kook statue and surf culture. The Kook itself is officially the Magic Carpet Ride sculpture, though locals know Cardiff as much for the bronze surfer as for "Cardiff crack," the marinated tri-tip from Seaside Market.

Taste of Cardiff returns on the first Thursday in May, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with samples of North County bites, craft beers, wines, spirits, and kombucha across downtown. Dog Days is the summer flagship. Cardiff 101 and the City of Encinitas host it as a free public event featuring dog-related vendors, rescue groups, and pet adoption agencies, and this year adds a Corgi & Dachshund Run sponsored by VCA Animal Hospitals. Wielechowski's pitch when she launched it captured why it works: a destination market with the region's best produce, meats, and makers "all within sight of the ocean and less than half a mile from the I-5," situated between Olivenhain, Encinitas, Solana Beach, and Rancho Santa Fe.

Cross Manchester to the lagoon. The San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center sits at 2710 Manchester, a five-minute walk from the market. The reserve is a 979-acre shallow-water estuary with seven miles of easy-to-moderate trails open sunrise to sunset, and the LEED Platinum-certified Nature Center is the place to plan the hike before you set out.

Loop the west basin. A new pedestrian bridge now connects Cardiff and Solana Beach across the lagoon, which changes the character of the walk. What used to be an out-and-back is now a genuine loop, and it opens up the option of finishing coffee in Cardiff and lunch in Solana Beach without moving the car.

If you want the tighter, harder version, Annie's Canyon is a quarter-mile trail that squeezes through sandstone slot walls, entered from the Rios Avenue trailhead on the Solana Beach side.

The food circuit locals actually rotate through

Skip the "top 10" energy. This is the working set:

• Seaside Market on San Elijo Avenue. The family-owned market opened its doors in 1985 and has been a mainstay in the community ever since. Buy the tri-tip.
• VG Donut & Bakery. The 5 a.m. crowd is a mix of surfers and construction crews. The apple fritter is the tell.
• Pipes Cafe. Order the breakfast burrito, sit outside, keep the sunglasses on.
• Pacific Coast Grill. Two levels of dining with every seat planned for an ocean view, plus a heated outdoor patio and a deck looking at the Cardiff Reef lineup. Sunday sunset.
• Chart House. A 65th anniversary in 2026 means the Cardiff outpost is now one of the oldest continuously operating white-tablecloth rooms on 101. Anniversary dinner territory.
• Cicciotti's for Italian with patio dining near the water.
• Las Olas Mexican on Restaurant Row.
• Lost Abbey taproom. The San Elijo taproom sits in the town square and pours IPAs currently only served in cans.

The names matter because in Cardiff, the difference between a good week and a great week is often deciding on Thursday which of these you're going to on Saturday.

The outdoor layer most residents underuse

Living within a mile of Cardiff State Beach and not knowing the parking math costs you an hour every weekend. The state beach uses demand-based pricing at $12 to $25 per vehicle, or a valid annual California State Parks Vehicle Day Use Pass, which pays for itself around visit six or seven. The reserve supports more than 300 bird species, federally threatened California gnatcatchers inhabit the coastal sage scrub, and leopard sharks cruise the nearshore shallows in summer.

That last detail matters more than it sounds. Leopard sharks are harmless. The other summer wildlife stories are the ones worth tracking. On April 27, 2026, a dead whale was reported floating about 400 yards off San Elijo Campground at Cardiff State Beach, with a shark estimated at about 15 feet long feeding off the carcass. Lifeguards towed the carcass out to sea. If you spot something, the city asks beach visitors to report shark sightings to lifeguards at 760-633-2750. Save the number.

A small civic detail worth knowing

If you or a parent is 60 or older and living in the 92007 or greater Encinitas footprint, one recent city program has been quietly useful. The Encinitas Senior Citizen Activity Assistance Program offers up to $300 in financial support per fiscal year to qualifying residents 60 and older participating in Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts programs, and residents apply through the city's website. Not the sort of thing that shows up in the neighborhood roundups. Exactly the sort of thing your neighbors know about and forget to mention.
